The Sri Lanka Project ...Katie’s most recent project was exhibited at the West Vancouver Library: a series of paintings inspired by her volunteer work in Sri-Lanka. Following the tragic tsunami in December 2005, Katie spent several weeks assisting the teacher’s and painting with physically and mentally handicapped children at Sambodi School & Orphanage, Galle. Her previous fundraising helped towards supplies for the school, the salary for the teacher’s aid and the school’s breakfast program.
Katie has kept in close contact with Sambodhi and is currently planning a return trip in February 2009. At present, she is working with ‘The Rotary Club’ to buy a new wheel chair for Ranjith, a little boy who lives in the orphanage. Her ongoing mission is to continue with the fundraising until she leaves for Sri Lanka next year. She hopes to raise sufficient funds to help pay for the teacher’s aid, breakfast program and everyday running of the school.
